Memory Joggers

Category : techniques

Meaningful journaling sometimes takes memory prodding. Use the following questions as you start the journaling process.

  • When was this picture taken? (year, day, season)
  • Was it a special occasion?
  • How did I feel?
  • What were the sights, smells, tastes, sounds?
  • Did anything funny, memorable, embarrassing or sad happen on this occasion?
  • What was going on in the world at that time?
  • What were the styles at that time?
  • If I return to this album 20 years from now, what would I want to remember about this photo?
  • If my children or grandchildren read this 20 years from now, what would I want them to know?

note – i didn’t write this, i think i got a crop night once long ago, but i find it very helpful when i get stuck for ideas!

Scrapbook Matting Techniques: Using Decorative Scissors

Category : techniques

There are several different scrapbook techniques you can use to add interest to your photo mats. One way is to use decorative scissors. When double or triple matting with decorative edges, start by cutting the smallest mat first. Adhere the smaller layer onto the next larger before making the next cuts. This makes it easier to evenly cut the second mat.

Did You Know?

Category : techniques

  • Creative Memories sticker pack envelopes are scrapbook safe and can be used as mounting sleeves in your albums?
  • It’s easier to cut vellum with a 12 inch cutter starting from the middle than the edges? You’re less likely to tear it that way
  • You can make your own stickers using a Xyron machine? I love mine – see them here

    journaling help

    Category : techniques

Most stories include five essential elements: who, what, where, when and why. Answering these questions can be a wonderful beginning to your journaling. Once you have the basics it becomes easier to fill in the details, adding feelings and descriptive words.

Who is in the photograph? Who took it?
What was happening? Is there more to the story than is shown in the photo?
Where was the photo taken? Was it in a special or unusual place?
When was the photo taken? (year, day, season, occasion)
    Why was this moment special?

The difficulty is trying to remember enough to journal it all properly. Especially my undergrad days when alot of my time was spent in a somewhat altered state…
